The HVCC has been putting on Game Fair since 2007.  The concept of a Game Fair comes from England, where in the later summer a country estate is the venue for a full range of traditional country activities including clay shooting, dog handling and falconry.

Our Game Fair isn’t nearly as elaborate. To begin with, ours takes place not on a country estate but on our beautiful 300 acre flagship farm in Parkville.  Nor is the range of activities as extensive, but what we do offer should warm the heart of any bird hunter, gun dog handler and other field shorts enthusiast.

Throughout the day a first rate  sporting clay venue is in operation.  These clay birds are challenging and the shooting takes place in a beautiful autumn farm setting.  A round of clay birds is reasonably priced.

Crossing Pheasant

Our gun dog demonstrations always draw a crowd.  A retrieving dog demonstration is put on by the Salt Chuck Hunting Retriever Club.  This will provide a thrill to anyone who enjoys top notch retrievers at work.  For those whose interests are inclined towards pointing dogs the Vancouver Island Pointing Dog Club does a demonstration of pointing dogs in the field with their pointers, setters and spaniels.  These demonstrations give aspiring gun dog handlers an opportunity to meet with experienced gun dog handlers and share information and insights.

The highlight of Game Fair for many is the Chukar partridge shooting.  Billed as the “Chukar gun dog warm up”, hunters both new and old are invited to shoot partridges over dogs in a beautiful and challenging setting.  Gun dogs are provided for those who don’t have dogs.  The birds are very reasonably priced.

For those who like to compete there is the Chukar Championship.  Six partridges are placed in the field on a challenging course.  Participants are timed with a stop watch by the Club’s Huntmaster.  The winner of the Chukar Championship Trophy is the hunter that shoots the most birds, with the fewest shells and brings the birds to bag in the shortest time.  It’s a lot of fun for competitors and spectators alike.

Game Fair is held on the last Saturday in September. More details will be posted on the Events Calendar page as the day approaches.
